I hope that you all had a restful Labor Day weekend!
This week there are a few fun firsts in store: This week we will attend Mass with our fourth grade buddies for the first time. The kindergartners were introduced to their buddies last Friday and are very excited to get to know them more this year. One Friday we will have our first school-wide Pride Day. For those of you new to Saint John, Pride days occur a few times throughout the year. The students are divided into "pride families" made up of kindergartners through 8th graders. During the pride family time student's share in a group discussion, activities and prayer based on the session's theme. This first Pride day will focus on getting to know one another and loving the way God made each of us! I will prepare the kiddos in class and ensure everyone transitions to their "pride family" feeling excited and prepared! Finally, this is the first week of the students bringing their own snacks. Please remember the students only have a short time to enjoy their snack so please pack accordingly. As for our curriculum: Literacy: The focus this week is Going to School. This week's high frequency word is "like". We will practice using the word in sentences, find it in our stories and readers, and practice writing it too! We continue our review of the alphabet and practice letters p,q,r,s and t. In Grammar we learned about nouns for people last week. This week we will learn about nouns for places. We are also listening for beginning sounds in words and finding similarities. The students loved starting our small group centers last week...and were excited to start reading.. We will continue the center fun this week! Religion: We learn that God made us in his image. We hear the story of Adam and Eve and how God created Eve from Adam. We will also hear the story of Jesus inviting the children to come to him when others tried to turn them away. We will discuss the love He has for us and the importance for us to show our love to Him. Math: The students are doing a wonderful job practicing their numbers 1-10. This week we learn the terms one more, one less, greater and less. We will work with number lines and counters to strengthen our understanding of the vocabulary. The students will get to apply their knowledge through hands-on math centers towards the end of the week in preparation for Assessment 2 next Monday. Social Studies: We will learn about Labor Day and the many jobs that people have. The students will share what they want to be when they grow up and what their jobs will entail. Thank you to those of you who have bringing in helping hand items for the classroom!! Many of them have already been put to good use! Please know the supplies are greatly appreciated! Have a great week! Mrs. Zander
