Week 9

10/1/2017

Hello October!
A few dates to keep in mind this week:
  • All school Rosary, Friday the 6 at Courtyard Prayer honoring Our Lady of the Holy Rosary.
  • Thursday, October 5 school picture retakes.
  • October 13, 16 and 17- No School
  • Friday, October 27 Harvest Fest at Saint John XXIII....stay tuned for more info!
I can't believe we have been in school for over two months. I feel like the students have grown so much already! This week will be an exciting week....the kinders get their first homework calendar!  Many of them have been sharing their excitement for homework to start and now it begins. On Monday you will receive a packet of information explaining the monthly homework calendar. This calendar should stay in the front cover of your child's red folder for easy reference.  If you have any questions about any of the assignments, please feel free to contact me. Remember this homework is intended to review the content we are learning in class and get children into the routine to help them in the following years of schooling.

Literacy: We start off the week with our first unit test on Monday. Our new theme this week is our 5 senses. We'll focus on the short /a/ sound and learn another high frequency word: see.  We are up to 5 words so far (I, like, the, and , & see).  We will begin to break down sounds in works and recognize sound patterns. In grammar we review our action verbs from the past few weeks and then learn about sensory words. Our books this week are, Listen, Listen & My Five Senses.

Math: This week's lesson is about positional words, as well as the concept before & after. We are continuing to practice counting and number writing too.  We will have an assessment on the lesson at the end of the week.

Religion: The lesson this week is all about God's house- the church. We will learn about a few of the important symbols that we see each week. We will also  learn about the leaders of the Catholic Church! We'll have a quiz Friday on the questions below.
  1. What do we call God's house on earth?  Church
  2. Why do we go to church?  To pray, learn about God, and worship Him
  3.  Who are the three leaders of the church?  Pope, Bishop, Priest
As mentioned, this Friday we will say an all school rosary in honor of Our Lady of the Rosary. The students have been saying a decade each day and getting very good at it!  I encourage you sometime this month,  to pray a decade of the rosary as a family.  “If families give Our Lady fifteen minutes a day by reciting the Rosary, I assure them that their homes will become, by God’s grace, peaceful places.”
--Fr. Patrick Peyton

Science and Social Studies: We will continue to explore apples with fun experiments, stories and art!

Have a great week!
